Drop Impact Dynamics: Impact Force and Stress Distributions

چکیده
Dynamic variables of drop impact such as force, drag, pressure, and stress distributions are key to understanding a wide range natural industrial processes. While the study kinematics has been in constant progress for decades thanks high-speed photography computational fluid dynamics, research on dynamics only peaked last 10 years. Here, we review how recent coordinated efforts experiments, simulations, theories have led new insights dynamics. Particularly, consider temporal evolution force early- late-impact regimes, well spatiotemporal features pressure shear-stress solid surfaces. We also discuss other factors, including presence water layers, air cushioning, nonspherical geometry, briefly granular cratering by liquid drops an example demonstrating distinct consequences impact.

Dynamics of drag and force distributions for projectile impact in a granular medium.
Our experiments and molecular dynamics simulations on a projectile penetrating a two-dimensional granular medium reveal that the mean deceleration of the projectile is constant and proportional to the impact velocity. Thus, the time taken for a projectile to decelerate to a stop is independent of its impact velocity. The simulations show that the probability distribution function of forces on g...

In the thermal spraying process, the process for the molten metal particles to hit against matrix to form coating experiences great change temperature. Since the coating materials has different thermal physical properties with the matrix materials, the residual stress is surely left in the coating. Much bigger residual stress not only restricts coating thickness but also primarily affects coati...
متن کاملHow microstructures affect air film dynamics prior to drop impact.
When a drop impacts a surface, a dimple can be formed due to the increased air pressure beneath the drop before it wets the surface. We employ a high-speed color interferometry technique to measure the evolution of the air layer profiles under millimeter-sized drops impacting hydrophobic micropatterned surfaces for impact velocities of typically 0.4 m s(-1). We account for the impact phenomena ...
متن کاملDrop impact on superheated surfaces.
At the impact of a liquid droplet on a smooth surface heated above the liquid's boiling point, the droplet either immediately boils when it contacts the surface ("contact boiling"), or without any surface contact forms a Leidenfrost vapor layer towards the hot surface and bounces back ("gentle film boiling"), or both forms the Leidenfrost layer and ejects tiny droplets upward ("spraying film bo...
متن کاملSingular jets and bubbles in drop impact.
We show that when water droplets gently impact on a hydrophobic surface, the droplet shoots out a violent jet, the velocity of which can be up to 40 times the drop impact speed. As a function of the impact velocity, two different hydrodynamic singularities are found that correspond to the collapse of the air cavity formed by the deformation of the drop at impact. It is the collapse that subsequ...
